An unforgettable adventure

In this fifth installment of the Tunnels series, most of the main characters are back on the earth's surface. Will, Chester, Elliott and Drake are stationed at a secure remote location, waiting for the next plan of attack. While Will and Chester train physically and mentally under the strict eye of Drake's father, Elliott is embracing her feminine side for the first time in her life. But the blessed quiet and recuperating time won't last long. The Styx army is about to enter a new phase...

The evil Rebecca twins are busy organizing the next step in their plans to take over the world. They are entering the Phase, a special time for their people that only comes around every once in a great while. The first step is to secure a safe and remote location. The second is to use the Dark Light treatments on hundreds of unsuspecting humans to control their minds. The Phase is a messy process, best done without witnesses or resistance. The Styx are building their army to finally stomp out the human race.

But a handful of Styx soldiers don't believe in what their leaders are doing. Eddie, Elliot's father, and his rebels have broken free of the Styx army and are willing to help Drake, Will and the rest defeat these blood-thirsty monsters. They inform our heroes about the upcoming Phase and together organize a plan. Unfortunately, there is a traitor in their midst, someone who will bring demise and danger to the group, leaving them buried alive and slowly running out of oxygen. They struggle and pool all of their meager resources to escape their death tomb. But even then, it's far from finished. In order to save the human race, Will may have to face his fears and return to a place he never thought he would see again: back down the Pore and into the "Land of the Second Sun" located in the very center of the earth.

Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams are gaining a bit of a reputation for dropping staggering bombshells of shock and surprise, and SPIRAL may be the mother lode. The newly introduced Phase is the ultimate shock wave, a grotesque, monstrous atrocity that will rivet readers to the bloody pages in horror. As for the rest of the book, just like the others in the series, it offers nonstop action in the most imaginative plot possible, a quest for both the mind and the heart. They are masters of building suspense, and the torturous wait is always worth it when the truth is finally revealed. The solid and colorful characters are the second stars of the show: vivid, diverse, heroic, brave, daring, evil, twisted, devious, and even a few oddballs. We meet some new personalities, but there are a few goodbyes as well; no one is safe under the hands of these talented and unpredictable authors.

Gordon and Williams also leave some of our heroes dangling in some sticky situations at the end, thus leading up to the series finale, which promises to be a bittersweet farewell to an unforgettable adventure.

Wow...

So I have been following the Tunnels series for about three years now and I'm a huge fan. I don't know where Spiral came from. The authors have really strayed from the family friendly writing that was evident in the other 4 books. There is cursing, inappropriate content, girls trying to seduce guys, Will and Chester talk about getting drunk, ect. Even though the Styx are insects it is still quite disgusting in several parts. Although the plot was epic and the storyline awesome, I was disappointed. Several of my family members and a lot of my friends are all into the series and we were all kinda shocked at the book. My little sisters haven't read it because of the content. If you set aside the negative issues, it is an awesome book. It was gritty and quite gruesome at some parts but all in all was pretty good. It was a little more on the short side though. Only like, 430 pages. I'm sorry but this book just wasn't as up to par with the others. Please make it up in the last book Roderick Gordon! :)

Book #5 did not disappoint. There was a lot more action and losses and your learn a very creepy item about the Styx race. Can't wait till Book #6 comes out to find out what happens in the end.

real support for the migraine soul

Andrew Levy eloquently conveys the inner world of a migraine sufferer. It was interesting to read about the many historical figures who suffered migraines, but as one who has read just about every "headache" book, it was his personal story that reached me the most.
As migraine sufferers we can find guides to what medications might help, what foods to maybe avoid, etc, but never have I come across such a gripping, relatable account of what it's REALLY like to live with migraine.
In reading his memoir I found comfort. I also was surprised at how he would say something in words that I had felt so many times during a severe attack. I think my favorite quote is near the end of the book where he says: "The only person who loves sunlight more than someone who loves sunlight is someone who must ration it." You see, that quote would only make sense at first read to a migraine sufferer.
I hope this book finds it's way into many a migraineur's hands...and hearts, like it did mine.

Not Just for Migraineurs

Part memoir, part history, part medical journal, part literary criticism. Andy Levy weaves all of this into a book that is as entertaining as it is informational, and for those who have silently suffered migraines for years, I think that the book could provide a sort of validation that their suffering is real.

In order to combat his own severe migraines, Levy dives into the subject, reading as much as his headaches will allow him, and then parses that knowledge out to us as if telling his story could be the cure.

He provides stories about historical figures whose migraines affected (positively and negatively) their contribution to society, including the possibility that St. Paul's conversion might have been the result of severe migraine, or that Alice in Wonderland was Lewis Carroll's attempt to describe the a migraine experience.

At the heart of this book, though, is the personal account of Levy's own battle. And it is here, that the book is most poignant. It is here that Levy, the migraineur, lets down the guard and invites the reader into his world. It is here where fellow migraine sufferers can take heart and believe that their own pain is valid.

Levy points out that 12% of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. So, if you don't suffer them, you know someone who does, and this book will help you understand their daily struggle to cope with the disease.

There can be life when you have migraines.

I really liked how Andrew Levy uses his book to capture the struggles of living with migraine along with a historical journey of migraine treatments of the past. He also writes about artists and personalities throughout history who also had migraine such Virginia Wolf, Van Gogh, Freud, and even Elvis.

Living with chronic daily migraine, I was interested to learn about how migraine has influenced literature, music and even religion. I had no idea how migraine had permeated the realm of artists like Van Gogh and writers like Emily Dickinson, nor was I aware that the book "Alice in Wonderland" was about migraine symptoms experienced by the Louis Carroll.

On a personal note, Levy explores the effects migraines have on relationships, exposing the range of emotions one has to go through in trying to maintain a relationship with a loved one when you are in chronic pain.

This book really expanded my knowledge of migraines impact on the world, and it made me feel not so alone with living with this illness. It also gave me hope that there can be life and positive creativity even when you have migraines.

Excellent, engaging book

I read Pamela Redmond Satran's "Babes in Captivity," and enjoyed it, but I thought this was even better. For one thing, the plot was much tighter, and filled with fun twists and surprises.

This is the story of Alice Green, a dowdy, 44-year-old housewife in suburban Homewood, New Jersey. Alice has always looked young for her age, though she hasn't bothered with her appearance for a long time. She's married to a dentist, who leaves her for his hygienist. Then Alice's daughter leaves for Africa, leaving Alice alone.

In the year following her husband's departure, Alice whips herself into shape by working out for a couple of hours a day. When she tries to re-enter the workforce, she is less successful. She tries to get a job at the publishing house where she worked before she had a child, but they dismiss her as dried-up and middle-aged.

After Alice tells a gypsy that she wants to be "younger," Alice's best friend gives her a makeover. With her gray hair dyed blonde and her newly fit body on display in tighter, more fashionable clothes, Alice decides to give the work thing another try. She returns to Gentility after taking all the dates off her resume and omitting the years she spent as a stay-at-home mom. She also goes to a bar and meets a young man named Josh.

What makes the novel work is not only the riveting plot, but Satran's careful look at the ups and downs of being young and old. She doesn't portray youth as a perfect haven, but instead shows how the "young" Alice must deal with an overbearing boss who doesn't take her seriously. She shows the pressure that the young women at the publishing company feel to get married and have kids before they're 35.

Alice's relationship with Josh is a little less plausible. After he sees her naked, he still thinks she's 29, and can't tell that she had a kid! It's hard to believe that after having a child she wouldn't have stretch marks or something.

However, Satran follows Alice's deception mostly smoothly from beginning to end, and it makes for very engaging reading.

Seems implausible, but the story works

Alice Green has had a really bad year. Her husband left her for his much younger dental hygienist, her mother died, and her daughter has dropped out of college and joined the Peace Corps. Despite having the luxury of looking younger than her 44 years, Alice has never really taken advantage of it. Her pal Maggie helps her enhance those looks to start the new year off to a good start. Soon, she catches the eyes of many younger suitors at a New York City bar.

Armed with her new appearance, and newly acquired confidence, Alice has changed places with herself, so to speak; she is living the life she lived prior to settling down and getting married. Suddenly, the job she applied for months earlier and was considered too old for is hers for the taking.

But now Alice is finding it difficult to live her lie, as she grows ever closer to her new boyfriend Josh, a man young enough to be her son. Josh assumes she is an older woman - he is thinking 29 - he is just now aware of how much older she is. As she and Josh delude themselves into thinking that they are a casual couple, both find that they are falling in love, which causes more pressure on Alice's over-burdened nerves, and their seemingly insurmountable 19-year age gap.

"Younger" works not only because of the great writing style of the author, but also because it does not portray either age as ideal - each has its own ups and downs and troubles and triumphs. It is really interesting to see a 40-something woman masquerading as a 20-something woman, and feeling the age discrimination issue from both ends when she is assigned to work for a jealous 30-something who treats her like the child that she thinks she is.

First Time Reader

I picked up this book for a couple different reasons.

One, I am 44 years old, just like Alice. Two, people usually think I am much younger than I am. Three, I tend to date younger men who have no idea how old I am when they begin the pursuit (who am I to tell, anyway?) and Four, I liked the first few paragraphs and figured, "Why not try out a new author, I haven't read any novels lately.. so.... Just go for it!"

I wasn't disappointed.

Pamela Redmond Satran creates multi-dimensional, interesting characters in situations the reader can both relate to and want to find out more about as well. I was fascinated (in an odd way!) about the Alice's new best friend, Lindsey... and wondered if young women like her are truly out there? I am guessing yes...

I also enjoyed being a part of Alice's choice making... and the miracles in Maggie's life, too... and regeneration of the relationship between Alice and her daughter.

So yes, there is romance (and unconventional romance, which I appreciate...) there is career, there is friendship, there is parenting... there is art...

A thoroughly enjoyable, engaging read - I will read more of Pamela Redmond Satran's books after discovering this one.

Excellent intro in Karate

The book is well illustrated, and gives an excellent introduction into the different stances and strikes found in Karate. More importantly, it is probably the only book that illustrates the "flow" of the moves, instead of just showing the ends of the move. Overall, the book is great for a Karate-ka who want to refine certain things in Karate. Finally, the price that Amazon sells it at is really hard to beat! Ron Przygodzki

Best karate book I've read

I studied from this book's spanish version. The precision with which Nakayama Sensei explained each technique is the closest thing to having a karate master teaching you the art. Even when nothing replaces the dojo experience, this series of books are the finest. Totally recommended

This Entire Series Is Nothing Short Of Phenomenal

This series is without-a-doubt, hands down, simply the best series of books ever written on the Japanese martial art of Shotokan Karate. The format and layout for this series of books is exceptional and the only negative thing I could possibly allude to is more of a selfish comment in the fact that I would have liked to have seen each book in the series be even longer and filled with even more solid information.

These books are well written and easy to learn from, although some of them do require a bit of previous knowledge in Shotokan Karate in order to get the benefits from it, but this should be obvious, hence the sequential volumes.

This particular volume explains and demonstrates a lot of the basic techniques of Shotokan Karate. I highly recommend this and any of the books in the series without reservation.

About the Author

After receiving his Ph.D in 1970, he joined the faculty of engineering at Tehran University and, in the next seven years, held the positions of assistant professor, associate professor, and chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. Pazwash has been a recipient of various academic awards, including a fellowship at Tehran University and a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of California, Berkley. He is the author of nearly 60 papers and five books.
