About the Author
Hamish Sanderson is a ten-year veteran of AppleScript and professional automation developer living and working in the U.K. Over the years, he has contributed a range of useful libraries and utilities to the AppleScript community and pops up with some regularity on the various AppleScript mailing lists. He is also the author of the highly regarded Appscript library, which brings AppleScript-style application scripting support to the Python, Ruby, and Objective-C languages on Mac OS X.

The founder of Custom Flow Solutions, Hanaan Rosenthal developed his first drawing program and published a programming newsletter at the age of 11. He became a digital media and prepress consultant in 1991, specializing in Mac publishing. In 1996, he took on his first full-blown AppleScript automation project and never looked back. Since then he has helped reshape the workflow of numerous publishing companies and departments creating systems that save their owners millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours annually. His clients include Fidelity Investments, Wellington Management, The Boston Globe, and Showtime Networks.

No exercises?

On only about the 5th chapter, and I just thought I'd report that so far this book has only had one complete exercise in I think chapter 3.

Most of the book seems descriptive. He explains all aspects of AppleScript, but you read for pages and pages and he never really seems to connect what he's describing to creating actual practical scripts. He could have put exercises at the end of chapters so that readers could merge theory with practice. It's clear the author knows his subject, but I think the First Head writers would do a better job at making a book like this one of practical use. I really find it annoying when authors explain complex definitions and then sum by saying, "now that you understand so and so." It's like why do you think that just because you have explained something, your readers are supposed to understand it? That's not how learning works. Learning comes through practice, and trail and error. When for example he defines and talks about class and properties, he should have readers do an exercise that helps them understand what he just spent five pages talking about.

Anyway, I'm going to keep reading; if it gets any better, I'll come back and update my review.

If you don't have an prior experience with AppleScript and you're ready to jump into actually doing so, this book is not the best one to begin with. If you do have experience, this might make good reference book.

Valuable resource; poor production

This is a massive volume, with the information to take the reader from beginning with AppleScript through advanced scripting. The information is up to date and seems to be accurate.

Unfortunately, the publisher did the reader and the author few favors with the way they prepared the book. I suppose in a book this large, a few typos and uncorrected homonyms might be expected to slip through, but my biggest problem is with the typography. It is common practice to use a monospaced font to distinguish code in the body of the text, and they do that here (it would have been nice if they had included an explanation of the conventions they are using). Unfortunately, they chose a sans serif font for the body text which is barely distinguishable from the monospaced font, which makes the whole thing much harder to read than it ought to be.

The explanations are complete, and yet succinct, a rarety in programming texts, and well suited to both the beginner and the experienced user of earlier versions of AppleScript. Loaded with many easy to follow, yet highly informative examples of useable scripts, as well as the most complete covering of controlling AppleScript unfriendly applications via GUI scripting I have seen to date. The primary focus is in AppleScripting OS X v6, with relevant info about v5.

Steve Robinson drew upon his own family history for inspiration when he imagined the life and quest of his genealogist hero Jefferson Tayte. The talented London-based crime writer, who was first published at age sixteen, always wondered about his own maternal grandfather—‘He was an American GI billeted in England during the Second World War,’ Robinson says. ‘A few years after the war ended he went back to America, leaving a young family behind and, to my knowledge, no further contact was made. A Quirky Formula

The best parts of this book were the flashbacks to the Nazi era before and during the war. The story follows two young German friends who had served in the Hitler youth and the SS together. It flashes forward to the present day, when an adoptee is seeking to find the identity of his parents who he thinks he has traced to Germany in the 1940s and 50s. This searcher, named Jefferson Tayte, believes his grandfather to be one of these two friends, one of which was a soldier with principles, the other a war criminal known as the Demon of Dachau. The portion of the narrative set in the past had all the Nazi intrigue you could hope for, and it is well thought out and constructed. The characters seem believable and hold the reader's interest. There are plot twists amid the chaos of war, and the tale is grippingly told. Unfortunately, the portion set in the present doesn't seem plausible, as two of the main antagonists are in their nineties, yet are alert and active. The author seems to want to use the formulaic elements of historic Nazi intrigue plus up to the minute news and technology. He probably should have chose one path or the other, either a modern research story, or a recreation of history. The outcome of the resulting combined narratives leaves the reader with not enough of the wartime story, and too much of an unlikely hodge podge conflict with thuggish neo nazis and nonagenarians in the present time. This approach might have worked better if the present-day portion had been set in the 1960s or 70s. The writing was well done and engaging, yet the story could have been better thought out.

Jefferson Tayte finally does his own genealogy.

I have been waiting - patiently - for the fifth Steve Robinson book about genealogist, Jefferson Tayte. Now that "Kindred" is here and I just finished it, I will be waiting again for his next adventure. "Kindred" has allowed "JT" to finally discover his own history (something that has eluded him his entire adult life). JT always seems to get himself in trouble while searching for client's ancestors and this was definitely no exception to the rule! I loved the way Mr. Robinson seamlessly moved from World War II action to the present day story. Telling JT's story from his parents' point of view and then switching to JT's search for that story could have been confusing but the author made it very clear. I will admit that every time he came back to the present time, I wanted to go back to the history part. There were so many twists and turns that I found myself turning on my kindle even when I had but five minutes to read! I really wanted to know how it would all come together! I certainly wasn't disappointed. If you are a new reader to Jefferson Tayte stories, I would suggest you start with the first book, "In The Blood", just to get to know the recurring characters. However, "Kindred" can stand alone. Try it, I loved it and I'm pretty sure you will, too!

Not Like the Other Jefferson Tayte Books, Much Darker

While I'm a HUGE fan of Jefferson Tayte , his character, and the mysteries he solves through genealogy this book was less than hoped for. I've read all five books and greatly disliked the violence depicted and the darker tone the book took as a whole. I stuck it out only because I wanted Jefferson's back story of him discovering his own family history. The book was dark and very much unlike any of the previous books. Will I read more? Not immediately. I'll wait for the reviews to come out and then decide. Until then I'm off to find a new author.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Lothar Redlin grew up on Vancouver Island, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1978. He subsequently did research and taught at the University of Washington, the University of Waterloo, and California State University, Long Beach. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, Abington Campus. His research field is topology.

Saleem Watson received his Bachelor of Science degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He did graduate studies at Dalhousie University and McMaster University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1978. He subsequently did research at the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warsaw in Poland. He also taught at The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Long Beach. His research field is functional analysis.

Upon being extremely disappointed about the fact that the book only contains answers ...

I rented this book for the sole purpose of checking the even answers not listed in the back of the textbook. Upon being extremely disappointed about the fact that the book only contains answers to odd-numbered problems, I checked the product description and saw that it does mention that it only contains even-numbered problems. The two stars are for me taking responsibility for missing the two words in the description, but otherwise, the product is worth zero stars to me. This product is misleading and cheap. I find it a rather significant fact that the solutions manual only contains half of the solutions, worthy of being written on the cover or in the title, or in some kind of warning somewhere. I am disappointed in how misleading and useless this product is.
