Decent review of American History

We used this book for my AP US history class. It is a decent text, but it often focuses on off topic things such as the color of a president's eyes or the geneology of his wife. (And I mean for the not so important wives, not like JFK's.) Also, Garraty's obsession with Keneysian economics becomes apparent starting in chapter 20. It is a descent text, rather bland as most texts come, but it drove me nuts to read it as I began. His liberal standpoint is obvious if you overlook the extreme brevity of his coverage of the Trail of Tears and the lack of content based on slavery. (There is a lot but not as much as demanded on the AP US test.)

Great book, priced too high

It is always shocking to me to stumble across "source material" that I was never exposed to throughout my school years. This book is in that category. I purchased this book after reading about it in Cal Newport's book "Deep Work."

I very much liked this book. It's a fascinating set of recommendations for those who want to focus on a particular (intellectual) task, successfully. While Newport's book is very practical, this book almost borders on the inspirational. There were definitely times when I found myself pumped up by the author's great writing style and his advice.

Sertillanges was a monk, so there is a liberal dose of Christianity throughout. Take it as you will. To me (a non-Christian), I found his evangelical advice as compelling and revealing as his practical advice.

xviii - “Do you want to do intellectual work? Begin by creating within you a zone of silence, a habit of recollection, a will to renunciation and detachment which puts you entirely at the disposal of the work; acquire that state of soul unburdened by desire and self-will which is the state of grace of the intellectual worker.”
- Self-importance means you put yourself before the work. You have to surrender to the work.
- Sertillanges says 2 hours per day of uninterrupted, deep study will do.
- LOVE is the guide. Literally - do what you love. Surrender to what you love and let it carry you. "Float downstream" in life.
- Find your GROUP!!! They can be anywhere - but it should be people who help drive you in your goal, that share a common goal, and have several people who are better than you at it!
- The phases of work are - Conceiving, planning, carrying out, and perfecting. Reduce the detours, bottlenecks, and delays!!

Page 132 - "Activity which is too intentional makes our intelligence less sure and less receptive; if we strive too anxiously, we remain shut up inside ourselves, whereas to understand is to become other, and in happy receptivity to let truth pour in upon us."

Read only what you want to retain, retain only what will be useful, and manage your brain by not cramming it absurdly.

Being a McLuhan-fan, I was astounded by what seemed like direct quotes from McLuhan (of course, it would have been the other way around) in this book. Sertillanges says that “God is a radiant center from which all points on the circumference of time are at an equal distance.” Did McLuhan see Acoustic space as GOD?…is that why he converted to Catholicism, devout Catholicism? More study will have to be done! At least I have a good plan to do that now...

My only qualification of the book is the price. Unfortunately, right now there's no way to separate comments about the publisher/format and the actual work itself. The work stands on its own. But it is a small paperback book. The price seems too high.

Worth Your Time

A. G. Sertillanges (1863-1948) was a French Dominican brother who studied the moral philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, the great Catholic theologian. Sertillanges published this particular work, "The Intellectual Life," primarily for lay Catholic readers who intend to pursue an intellectual activity as at least a part of their life's main work. His model is a short letter attributed to Aquinas that goes by the name of "Sixteen Precepts for Acquiring the Treasure of Knowledge," and his goal is to update Aquinas's vision of intellectual work as expressed principally in this letter for a modern reader. Following Aquinas's lead, Sertillanges gives practical and theoretical guidance in the topics of the proper mode of living for an intellectual and the moral and intellectual framework that should underly a life devoted to study.

Among the most interesting of Sertillanges' arguments is the idea that an intellectual life must be a vocation in the sense that an individual must have an inborn desire for intellectual work, and further that a personal lacking such a call will not have the will to accomplish anything in the intellectual sphere, despite perhaps possessing great intelligence or other virtues. So the first insight is that will to do and an interest in intellectual work is the first, most important qualification, and that success or failure in an intellectual occupation is mainly an issue of disposition rather than intelligence.

Another principal argument is the idea that an intellectual has a moral obligation to the rest of mankind, and that this obligation demands that all intellectual work must have an eventual practical use for society. The same moral obligation also dictates that an intellectual should prefer a project that is within their ability to complete rather than another greater and perhaps more interesting project that is too large for their gifts, because a completed project does service to the world while an uncompleted work does not serve anyone.

Sertillanges also argues that while we should initially develop a broad intellectual base of knowledge to build upon, a deep speciality knowledge is essential to actually understanding the world. He believes that real knowledge is always a knowledge of root causes. One cannot hope to develop this knowledge by a broad survey of many subjects, but instead by endeavoring to understand at least one subject down to the fundamentals. To know one thing is necessarily to neglect others, and a certain amount of ignorance is necessary and unavoidable for a true intellectual.

Other reviewers on this site have criticized Sertillanges as being uncomfortably effusive over religious themes, and this is without a doubt a fair criticism. Additionally, many of his arguments rely on appeals to Catholic theology and morality, and it follows that readers who do not share Sertillanges' beliefs may have trouble accepting certain of his conclusions. The Catholic idea of service and good works does however adapt pretty well to a humanist paradigm, and readers who approach the work from this angle will likely be able to resolve the issue to their satisfaction.

A related criticism is that most of Sertillanges' arguments are unscientific in nature, and rely more on metaphorical examples and biographical episodes than on cause and effect or logic. This criticism is harder to answer, except to say that many of Sertillanges' conclusion really have the ring of truth when contemplated in the context of one's own education experience, and seem to be effective when put into action.

Aside from those qualifications, this book is the most insightful I've read on the topic of education and learning, and among the first rank of anything I've ever read. On an initial approach, many of Sertillanges' conclusions are ideas that you may feel that you have a decent understanding of already. There is, however, a significant functional difference between half-knowledge and actual knowledge, that is to say that you will get more out of an idea that you have developed to enough of a degree to trust in action as compared to another idea with which you are merely familiar. Additionally, many of Sertillanges conclusions share a counterintuitive element with the arguments I summarized above. For those reasons, I give this work my very highest recommendation.

And there are plenty of maxims in this book. I missed not being able to highlight them on my Kindle, but, then again, it's just as well, since I would have highlighted half the book. My favorite may be an unattributed quote "He who stumbles without falling takes a bigger step forward."

Sertillanges outlines the nature of and the virtues needed for the intellectual life. He discusses the balance of the physical, mental, and social aspects of the intellectual life. Much of it centers on balancing the depth and breadth of focus: studying and recreation; sitting and walking, reading and looking around; learning and creating, etc.

Open to any random page and you are likely to read an inspiring thought in a well-turned phrase. As I read I kept imagining one sentence after another being posted to someone's Facebook status.

This is an ennobling manifesto of living a life devoted to thought.

"Challenges" sections are shorter and are nestled in the corners of the page, while "On Scripture" and "Reflections" are at the bottom of the page in a single column. This retains quite a bit of readability, mostly because the "Challenges" are infrequent, but also because the intrusions have a nice order and are separated by shading and color as well as by position and font choice.

The KJV text is presented in two columns in a traditional verse per line format. This is partnered with an outside column of cross-references which are fairly small but very readable because of the font choice and the placement on the outside margin. The text stands in a nice nine point font, which is generous and readable but not quite large enough to be considered large print.

The text and layout is divided by color as well as by position, which gives it a nice aesthetic appeal and helps divide the portions of the text. This is similar to the Max Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, but is accomplished far better with different tones of red, orange, brown and gray.

Jesus words are presented in a very pleasing crimson; however, this inclusion of color in the rest of the layout makes it so that this feature doesn't pop as much as in other editions.

This layout succeeds in a complex arrangement of different text, color, column, and font styles. The shaded boxes accent the double column layout without detracting significantly from readability and the choice to make an outside column for the cross-references makes them highly accessible but also nearly invisible during casual reading. The design and purpose of this Bible does not lend itself to a consistent layout, but Hendrickson has created a well-laid out consistency that maintains readability and a heavy aesthetic style.

The A.W. Tozer Bible allows Tozer's classic works to illuminate the Bible text and invigorate spiritual devotion and Bible meditation. The main feature used to accomplish this purpose is the "On Scripture" passages, which select passages from Tozer's writings and sermons that focus on the revelation within a certain scripture. The Bible includes over 365 of these selections, which stand out as the feature most akin to traditional study notes or devotional Bible material. In addition to the "On Scripture" passages, the Bible also features "Reflections" and "Challenges" which may relate thematically to scripture but stands more alone without direct relation to Scripture. The Bible includes over 500 passages within the text, which averages out to about one on every other page of the Bible. While this is not anywhere near a full study Bible, the selections are longer than study notes and occur often enough that one or more would be paired with daily reading selections.

Tozer maintains a strong literary style and a powerful, insistent tone. His writing is saturated with a heavy emphasis on holiness, an expansive view of God, a passion for intimacy with Christ, and a biting indictment of worldliness within the church. His writing is expressive of a deep love for God and a jealous fervor over the backslidden church. His words often jar the soul into life even as they inspire greater love and devotion to God.

This Bible features succinct book introductions, a brief biography of A.W. Tozer, well formatted cross-references, a 145 page concordance and eight multi-color maps.

Most of these features are standard in a reference edition, though the A.W. Tozer Bible features a larger concordance and fewer cross-references than most.

CONCLUSION

A.W. Tozer was extremely prolific and his journals and sermons are still being compiled into new volumes of work. In some ways I was disappointed that this edition didn't take greater advantage of his copious amount of writing, as a complete study Bible or commentary would almost be possible to extract from his life's work. However, this edition does present a large body of his material in close proximity of the biblical text. The 500 plus selections from his works are the equivalent of a full survey of his writing and will provide more than enough devotional and inspirational content for the average reader. In addition the formatting and layout of this Bible is well accomplished and aesthetically pleasing. Because of the intermittent nature of the selections, I would not recommend this as a reference work, but as a fully functional Bible for the A.W. Tozer aficionado or for those who wish to include Tozer's rousing words in their daily study of the Bible.

A good reading and divotional Bible

The A. W. Tozer Bible from Hendrickson Publishers is a study/devotional Bible with writings from one of the 20th century's most beloved Christian authors. A. W. Tozer was a Pastor, Preacher, Teacher, and Student who wrote many books in his 40-year ministry. This Bible includes over 500 selections from his writings.

Text
The font looks to be a more modern digital font. I'm not sure of the font's size, but it looks close to 9-point. It has extra leading between the lines, giving plenty of room to underline. There are no footnotes indicators in the text itself. This makes the text very clean and readable.

One of my favorite features is the text layout. Poetry is set in verse format which is offset from the regular text. I like the way this looks. It helps not only to identify the genre of Scripture, but also makes the text more readable.

The reference of the first verse that appears on the page is printed at the top of each page. Paragraph markers continue throughout the New Testament. Headings and verse numbers are bold, making them stand out from the rest of the text. The red-letter is a nice shade of red. There is some variation, but it does look nice and it's very readable. Book introductions include information on the books background, message, time, and an outline complete with verses.

Paper
The paper isn't shiny or too thin, making this a good Bible for coloring and writing. It's fairly opaque, making it easier to read.

References
The references are on the outside margin. They include the verse number. There are no indicators in the text to know which reference goes to which portion of the verse. There are a lot of references, with most verses having several. The references do not contain translation notes.

Features
What makes this Bible unique is its 500 selections that are taken from 40 of Tozer's writings. The selections are placed into three categories called On Scripture, Reflections, and Challenges and mostly vary from 2 to 4 paragraphs (though there are a few smaller and a few larger). The selections are well-written with the focus on deepening your walk with God.

On Scripture - these are insights of specific verses or passages. They're found on the page with the passage and often contain thoughts on application. These make up the majority of the articles.
Reflections - the articles are deeper thoughts about the application of Scripture.
Challenges - these are challenges to strengthen your walk with God through Biblical application.

Concordance
The concordance is 145 pages. There are plenty of entries to look up. The entry for God takes almost a full column of text, which is more than most Bibles.

Maps
There are 8 pages of maps. The maps are in full color and they look nice. The paper for the maps is thicker than the other paper. There is no index to maps.

Citations of Tozer's Works
In the back is a list of Tozer's 40 works that are cited throughout the Bible.

Conclusion
The A. W. Tozer Bible has many features in its layout that I would like to see as standard in Bibles. As far as the content, there are a lot of insights that make for good thought-provoking study and reading. Tozer's writings give this Bible a rich devotional quality. The A. W. Tozer Bible would be a valuable addition to your library.

A W Tozer King James Bible is wonderful

A W Tozer has become my favorite Christian writer. His books are easy to read and insightful. They are well written and give such helpful information not found elsewhere. He has been a wonderful discovery, amazon has been very helpful as an on line book store, where I happened to discover A W Tozer, having never heard of him in my youth. Making up for lost time, though, and very thankful this man came into our lives through the written word, a real blessing! My first book of his was The purpose of man, really stood out, and as I read that first book, I knew that A W Tozer became my paster! A great man, and author of great books! His King James Bible is wonderful too. I hope you will discover how good his books are today! :)

The author's expertise in running Gingercake Patterns, an online pattern business, is put to good use in a book that's half-helpful suggestions for those who want to start a home-based sewing business and half a selection of 16 sewing patterns that can be used to make projects to sell. The first section contains valuable information on everything from identifying potential customers to taking good photos for online sales and setting prices for craft shows. Lindsay doesn't offer much advice about the less glamorous and more practical aspects of setting up shop, such as incorporating a business or figuring out a profit margin, but there's enough to be worthwhile. The projects are cute, too, including a simple boxy pincushion and an appealing, reversible grocery tote, all clearly explained with step-by-step diagrams. None of the patterns are revolutionary, but - this is key - Lindsay grants permission for all 16 projects to be sewn and sold, an important consideration for those starting a sewing business, and quite possibly making the book worth the price just for those. Worth the Money. Patterns are Cute too!

Nicely laid out, well organized. I really liked the 'stock your shelves' notes on how to make multiples at once and pointers on how to make fabric use more economical (aka make four at once and need less overall yardage than doing one-offs). Plus youtube videos showing how to make some of it. I sewed the market tote two days after I got this, and it was peasy easy especially having seen the youtube first (that video is what led me to tracking down the book). I purchased this kindle, and in the kindle version they give a link to a place to download the patterns, so it was instant gratification and print and tape together my own pattern pieces. I think the investment was well worth the price.

This book is full of helpful information. It is written for the newbie containing great ideas and tips for marketing and selling your work. I was really pleased I purchased this book. Don't know if I'll start a craft business at this point but now have information to assist me in making the decision.

Great love story in its own right

Children of Liberty is the prequel to the much loved Bronze Horseman series. Set in Boston at the turn of the last century, it tells the story of the forbidden love between Gina Attaviano and Harry Barrington, who feature as Alexander's parents in The Bronze Horseman. Fourteen-year-old Gina, just arrived from Sicily with her mother and brother Salvo, first meets Harry and his best friend Ben as the young men try to drum up customers for their apartments for immigrants near the Freedom Docks. And although the family only stay for one night before making their own way to nearby Lawrence to live with other family members from Sicily, Ben is instantly smitten by Gina's dark-skinned, dark-haired sensual beauty. Despite Salvo's efforts to protect his sister and his obvious animosity towards her American admirers, Ben starts making frequent visits to the Attaviano family, dragging his friend Harry along for company. Gina, an enterprising young woman with big dreams for the future, falls head-over-heels in love with Harry, the son of a wealthy Boston businessman, who is also engaged to one of Boston's most eligible socialites. Considering Gina's youth and their vastly different backgrounds, her love for him seems doomed from the very beginning. But Gina does not give up that easily ....

The problem with prequels of much loved books is that they are being read with high expectations, and can easily disappoint when those are not met. Since The Bronze Horseman features on my all-time-favourites list, I tried to put those thoughts aside when picking up this book, and to read it with an open mind and judge it on its own merits rather than in comparison with its sequels. And whilst Boston's politics and turn-of-the-century history could never compete with the interesting and dramatic backdrop of the siege of Leningrad, I was soon drawn into the story and really enjoyed reading about Harry and Gina's love story. As Alexander's parents I had thought them rather foolhardy for trading the freedoms of American life for the confines of communism, despite trying to understand their idealistic political beliefs. Reading about their young love totally changed this opinion, and their characters gained much more depth as I read about their youthfully innocent hopes for a better future.

Gina Attaviano is a delightful character. Like Tatiana, she sparkles with youthful innocence and energy, and I liked her tremendously. Her scheme to win Harry over and ingratiate him with her brother was nothing short of ingenious. I could picture her vividly, this colourful Sicilian peasant girl, so different from her stuffy Bostonian counterparts. No wonder half of Boston's bachelors would have fallen instantly in love with her. And how dreary a life it must have been for women at that time, despite their wealth and the nice clothes - not surprising that speakers like Emma Goldman drew such large crowds as women were fighting for recognition as equals in society. Simons does an excellent job at painting Boston society at the beginning of the 20th century - although I admit that a lot of the political details were lost on me, as I was mostly ignorant about Boston's historical past and famous characters and had to google them to understand their background (I am a little bit wiser now :). And whilst Gina and Harry's love story did not evoke the same roller coaster ride of emotions as the one I experienced reading the Bronze Horseman, I enjoyed every moment reading this book and finished it in one day.

My advice to readers is to read this story in its own right, not as a prequel to The Bronze Horseman - and let it take you on its own unique journey.

Children of Liberty: A Novel...

I've just finished "Children of Liberty" by Paullina Simons.

I also read the reviews of the some of my fellow "Amazon Vine" bretheren to see what they thought before putting down my thoughts.

My take is as follows:

1. Well-written (I expect no less, from Ms. Simons!)

2. As this is fiction, I rather liked her melding in with the ideas/opinions of the times (socialism, communism, suffrage, even the Panama Canal!) and involving/weaving her characters into those topics to give them multi-dimensional life! It made me think of how anyone with even a little education could have been swayed to one side or another (with wide-ranging results). So, I didn't find the topics convered in this book boring at all!

3. Harry, at the age of 20, met his soul-mate - a girl of 14, who had made her mind up then - and there that he was the man for her. Yes, Harry had the good sense to avoid her - but couldn't - he could only delay the inevitable.

4. The interaction between Harry and his world, Gina and her world, and the intersection(s) therein made their lives pure joy, and pure hell. Harry had everything going for him - and threw it all away for (true) love? Not original - and in his case - costly. How much did Harry pay to have Gina in his world? Read on and find out! (Note: What have you paid for love - some might be able to relate - hopefully on a different scale - again - if you read, you'll get my meaning!)

5. If Paullina Simons pens a sequel "Children of Liberty", I will buy it - and read it! Yes, we who have read the "Bronze Horseman" series know what happened to Alexander's parents - we have limited detail - but, I would like a full treatement of that aspect of Harry and Gina's life - however short it was cut.

6. Finally, if this book was written first, would we be the Paullina Simons fans that we've become? I can't even hazard a guess! (Anyone remember the "Star Wars" movies from 77-83? We were treated to the "middle" of that story, also!) Folks, give the book a chance!

This book is a prequel to the wildly popular Bronze Horseman trilogy, a series I enjoyed a lot despite the need for a red-pencil guy (book #3 went on and on and on). Readers familiar with the back history of Alexander's parents have an expectation of what they're likely to find in this book, so I won't spoil for those new to the story. Unfortunately, this book ends where it should have been started, and I hear that there's at least one more book in the works to tell the story that fans of these books are waiting to read, a story that you aren't going to get in this book.

Children of Liberty begins in 1899 with the immigrant Attaviano family arriving in Boston Harbor to start a new life in America, and almost fifteen-year-old Gina is full of hope and promise. Harry Barrington and his friend Ben offer their assistance to the family (Harry's father owns several apartment houses that cater to Italian immigrants). The Attaviano family begin their new life with a family in a nearby town, and Harry returns to his privileged life in Boston. The bulk of the book then alternates between dinner party after dinner party at Harry's family home with endless conversations talking about politics and socialism, and the struggles of Gina and her family to make a go of things, and whether or not Gina should work or go to school.

I'm the kind of reader that prefers a story to start when there's something interesting happening, and then backtrack and fill in the gaps. In this case, the book should have been started at page 375 and moved on from there (but then that's one less book to be sold). While I admire an author who uses dialog to set up the story instead of endless info dumps, the dialog here and the discussions contained therein were endless and mind-numbing. The same discussions over and over and over and over again, for almost 375 pages of this 422 page book. Add to this misery two of the most unlikable characters I've come across since those gawd-awful 50 Shades books. Harry is dull as dishwater and a spineless ninny to boot. I know Gina was a teenager for most of the book (we all know what teenagers are like), but she wastes no time in lying to her family and the nuns at school and sneaking out with a friend to meet the much older Harry and Ben in Boston. Perhaps they'll grow up and be more sympathetic characters in the next book, but you won't find much to care about here. Library only, then buy it if you love it.

Buy it yee!

Before I had this book my life barely made sense. I would lose track of all my Starcraft 2 news and spend days rocking back and forth in the shower, a shell of a human being. After reading the introduction I'm almost at the top of Masters league! Must buy for Starcraft players and anyone who needs something to read while on the toilet.

Fantastic Read for the Starcraft 2 Fanatic or New-Comer

This book is a fantastic way for new players or long time fans alike to be recapped on the competitive scene of Starcraft 2 in the past year.

Included in the book

-recap of all major events (online and offline tourneys)
-player biographies, styles, and performance
-patches, metagame and strategy shifts
-changes in map pools (ladder and tourney)
-player records and detailed statistics
-much much more!

It would have been easy to simply provide tables where appropriate and list out bare bones facts, but the author does a great job of keeping the subject matter interesting and relevant every step.

I've been reading the Kindle Version, but every time I look at my coffee table I see a place for the hardcover.

Great read, great job Robert. Looking forward to 2012 next!

A very unquie SC2 book.

Although I have barely skimmed through it so far, I have enjoyed what I have read so far. This book offers a fairly comprehensive overview of the major events and people of the SC2 community in the year 2011 and is written in a very easy to read style.

The book itself is divided into 4 chapters and two appendixes with an introduction and an index obviously. Chapter 1 describes the game, especially the maps, itself, 2 discusses strategy, 3 discusses players, and 4 discusses the major leagues. The appendixes discusses player records and statistics (such as win/loss ratios) respectively.

If you enjoy the SC2 community and the pro scene in particular, this would make an excellent addition to your bookshelf.
