Review
"I love how short and direct the chapters are. As always, your writing is clear and concise. I truly feel as though you're talking to me. The thank-you section underscores what you do so well as a director and what is different about what you do than what most other directors do, and that's express gratitude and reinforce that theatre is a collaborative medium. That's one of the great lessons I learned from you that I took into my career as a director, and it's honestly some of the best feedback I got from actors. And I think actors appreciate it because it's rare." Cristopher Tibbetts, Director, Minneapolis, MN
From the Author
What is The Process of Play Directing? It is a brief, but to-the-point, approach to the art of directing. It's a checklist for the seasoned director and a quick how-to for the novice director who wants to learn some of the tricks of the trade. More importantly, it's a reflection of my thoughts on directing compiled in concept to curtain order.
So who am I to be writing a book on directing (I've never directed on Broadway or a major motion picture), and why would you want to read a book on directing that I have written?
Because I've survived and made a living as a working director in this screwy business we call show. I've suffered for my art. I've eaten many a cold cheeseburger at a heated tech rehearsal. I've neglected relationships for the sake of the show. The theatre fuels my blood type: A-positive for the show!
I've been in the theatre trenches for fifty years, and guiding over four-hundred and fifty shows to opening night at professional theatres, dinner theatres, community theatres, high school theatres, and university theatres all over the world.
This book is not going to make you a great director. It's not going to guarantee that you'll direct on Broadway and win a Tony Award after reading it. It is going to help you be a better director by understanding the basic tools of the trade learned through my many years at the helm. I was encouraged by my many collaborators over the years to write this book.
Directing is an art. It is not just coaching actors on their performances. That's part of it, but there is so much more to the ART of directing. Why is directing an art? On any stage, but especially a proscenium stage, a director paints a picture just as a painter does on a canvas or a photographer does with film.
And just as a head football coach maps out plays for the players and team to win ... a director manipulates his performers in the same winning process. The director's most important job is to interpret the playwright's words.
I have always prided myself that I was trained as a director; I was not just an actor who wanted to direct. If you are the actor who wants to direct or finds himself in the position of directing, I hope this book will help. If you're a seasoned director it will remind you of old and, hopefully, new techniques to use.
So why don't I stop talking about what I did and get to it? The book is divided into four sections:
1). Defining the director
2). Pre-rehearsal work
3). Rehearsal
4). Tips
